AUDITIONS FOR SOO OPERA!!!

Christopher Hollingsworth, Faith Nayback and Gabbie Pepin in the 2018 Opera

Materials are currently being accepted for chorus and comprimario roles for the Soo summer opera. Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly” is on deck for August 7 and 9 performances at the Soo Theatre and August 11 on Mackinac Island. Interested parties can arrange an audition with artistic director Karen Beacom or submit their materials online by emailing sootheatre@gmail.com. Artists are encouraged, but not required, to participate in the vocal and opera workshop to be held on July 22-26. Workshop students will perform their own gala on Friday, July 26 at 7pm on the Soo Theatre stage. Sing along side professional opera singers and enjoy the spectacular music of the Italian master Giacomo Puccini!

Beginning Strings Camp
July 8-12 & 15-19
Youth Monday-Friday, 3:30-4:30
Adults Monday-Friday, 4:30-5:30

Beginning Strings Camp is for those who have never played a stringed instrument, but would like to learn. This 2 week intensive setting is a great way to try a stringed instrument, because the muscle memory can form quickly when you are playing 5 days in a row. This camp is offered July 8-12 and 15-19. Youth meets Monday through Friday, 3:30-4:30pm and Adults meet Monday through Friday, 4:30-5:30pm.

We do have a limited number of violins to loan for the youth camp (thanks to generous grants from YAC and the Roberts P and Ella B Hudson Foundation). These instruments are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Violin will be the main instrument for this camp, but viola and cello are also offered.

Chamber Music Camp
July 22-26
Monday-Friday, 4:30-7:30pm

Because this camp had such great success last year with strings, we have opened it to woodwinds and brass, as well. Both adults and youth are welcome and you do not have to register as a group. If you register, we will assign you to a group. Instructor Alan Jacobus joins us to coach the woodwinds, and Brian Carter from Alpena, MI, joins us to coach brass. Chamber Music Camp will meet July 22-26, Monday through Friday 4:30-7:30pm with a performance on Friday, July 26th.
